About Al Taliaferro

Al Taliaferro, also known as Charles Alfred Taliaferro, was a prominent Disney comic strip artist who created and produced Disney comic strips for King Features Syndicate. His most famous work was on the Donald Duck comic strip, but he also worked on Mickey Mouse and Bucky Bug comics, as well as Silly Symphonies pages. Taliaferro co-created several beloved characters, including Huey, Dewey, and Louie, Bolivar, Grandma Duck, and possibly Daisy Duck. He drew Donald Duck comic strips from 1938 until his passing in 1969 in Glendale, California. Taliaferro’s artistic talents were evident from a young age, and he studied art at the “Institute of Art” in California after his family moved to Glendale. While many of his strips were reprinted in Disney comic books, he only did original artwork for comic books on a few occasions. Additionally, he illustrated two children’s books featuring Disney characters. The Taliaferro family has a long history, tracing their origins to Northern Italy and being one of the early settler families in Virginia in the 17th century. The family name, originally Tagliaferro, translates to “Ironcutter” in Italian.
