Biography Charles M. Schulz

Charles Monroe Schulz was an American cartoonist known for creating the iconic comic strip Peanuts, which remains popular and influential to this day. Schulz’s career in cartooning began with his first regular cartoons, Li’l Folks, which were published from 1947 to 1950. It was during this time that he first introduced the character Charlie Brown. In 1950, Schulz approached the United Feature Syndicate with his best strips from Li’l Folks, and Peanuts made its first appearance on October 2, 1950. From then on, the strip became one of the most popular in the history of the medium.

Peanuts ran for nearly 50 years, reaching over 2,600 newspapers in 75 countries at its peak. Schulz continued to work on the strip almost without interruption, taking only one vacation during its entire run. His routine included eating a jelly donut and then sitting down to write and draw the day’s strip. Schulz was known for his dedication to his work, refusing to hire an inker or letterer to assist him.

In addition to his work on Peanuts, Schulz also created other comic strips such as It’s Only a Game and contributed a single-panel strip featuring teenagers to Youth magazine. He also touched on religious themes in his work, particularly in the classic television cartoon A Charlie Brown Christmas. Schulz’s own spiritual journey evolved over time, and in the late 1980s, he described himself as a “secular humanist.”

In November 1999, Schulz suffered a stroke and was later diagnosed with colon cancer. Due to his health issues, he announced his retirement from cartooning in December of that year. Throughout his career, Schulz remained dedicated to his art and left an indelible mark on the world of cartooning.
