About Charles Palliser

Charles Palliser, an American-born, British-based novelist, has had a prolific and varied career. Born in New England, Palliser has lived in the United Kingdom since the age of three. He attended Oxford University, where he studied English Language and Literature, earning a First in June 1970 and a B. Litt. in 1975 for a dissertation on Modernist fiction. Palliser worked as a Lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow from 1974 to 1990, and was the first Deputy Editor of The Literary Review when it was founded in 1979. In 1990, he left his university post to become a full-time writer when his first novel, The Quincunx, became an international best-seller and has since published four novels that have been translated into a dozen languages.

In addition to his work as a novelist, Palliser has written for the theatre, radio, and television, and has taught creative writing at various institutions. He has also been recognized with awards such as the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction and nominations for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. Furthermore, Palliser has contributed to various publications on 19th century and contemporary fiction and has been involved with the North London Writers circle.
