About Charles Péguy

Charles Pierre Péguy (7 January 1873 – 5 September 1914) was a French writer, poet, and essayist. He was also known by the pen names Pierre Deloire and Pierre Baudouin. His diverse body of work includes plays in free verse, such as “Le Porche du Mystère de la deuxième vertu” (1912), and poetry collections in regular verse, such as “La Tapisserie de Notre-Dame” (1913), which was inspired by mysticism and notably evoked the historical figure of Joan of Arc, to whom he remained deeply attached throughout his life. Péguy was also a committed intellectual: after being a militant anarchist, anti-clerical, and Dreyfusard during his studies, he moved towards Catholicism and conservatism from 1908 onwards. He is known for his essays expressing his social concerns and rejection of modernity, such as “L’Argent” (1913).
