Biography Charlotte Joko Beck

Charlotte Joko Beck, an American Zen teacher, had a diverse background before delving into Zen practice. Born in New Jersey, she initially pursued a career in music, studying at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and working as a pianist and piano teacher. After raising a family of four children and going through a separation from her husband, Beck worked various jobs, including as a teacher, secretary, and university department assistant. In her 40s, she began her Zen practice in Los Angeles with Hakuyu Taizan Maezumi, later studying with Hakuun Yasutani and Soen Nakagawa. After receiving Dharma transmission from Taizan Maezumi Roshi, she founded the Zen Center San Diego in 1983 and served as its head teacher until 2006.

Beck’s teaching methods were revolutionary in the world of Zen, as she encouraged students to confront and work through their everyday emotions rather than trying to escape them. She had a particular attraction to those interested in the intersection of Zen and modern psychology, with several of her Dharma heirs being practicing psychologists and psychiatrists. In 1995, Joko founded the Ordinary Mind Zen School with three of her Dharma heirs.

After her departure from the Zen Center in 2006, Beck revoked Dharma transmission from two senior students and expressed that the center should not claim to represent her or her teachings. She continued to teach in Prescott, Arizona, until her retirement in late 2010 when she announced Gary Nafstad as her last Dharma successor.
