Biography Chris Bonington

Chris Bonington, a graduate of University College School, London and the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, began his career by commission in the Royal Tank Regiment in 1956. After spending time in North Germany commanding a troop of tanks, he transitioned to the Army Outward Bound School where he became a mountaineering instructor. It was during this time that he discovered his passion for climbing in the Alps, achieving notable accomplishments such as the first British ascent of the South West Pillar of the Drus in 1958 and the first ascent of the Central Pillar of Freney on the south side of Mont Blanc in 1961. These climbs were considered some of the most difficult in the region and remain classics to this day. Additionally, he made history with the first British ascent of the North Wall of the Eiger in 1962.
