Who is Cora Sandel

Sara Cecilia Görvell Fabricius, known by her pen name Cora Sandel, was a Norwegian writer and painter known for her famous Alberta Trilogy novels. Born in Kristiania (now Oslo), she faced financial difficulties at a young age, prompting a move to Tromsø with her family. Under the tutelage of Harriet Backer, she began pursuing painting and later moved to Paris, marrying the sculptor Anders Jönsson. After divorcing Jönsson, she won custody of her son Erik and returned to Sweden in 1921.

Struggling to establish herself as a painter in her youth, it wasn’t until she was 46 that her debut novel, Alberte and Jakob, was published, marking the beginning of the semi-autobiographical Alberta Trilogy. These novels, inspired by her own experiences, focused on the spiritual struggles of isolated women, earning Sandel a place in the Scandinavian literary canon. Despite her success, she remained reclusive and lived under her pen name. In 1957, she received the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav and lived out her days in seclusion in Sweden. Today, her home in Tromsø houses the Perspektivet Museum, commemorating her life and work.
