Biography Ronan Fanning

Born in Sandymount, Dublin, John Ronan Fanning was a prominent figure in the academic and political world. He earned his degree in History from University College Dublin (UCD) after initially studying English. His academic career took him to Georgetown University, Exeter University, and ultimately back to UCD as a lecturer. Fanning was best known for his involvement in the Northern Irish Peace process, where he played a key role in persuading the US to support the negotiations between John Hume and Gerry Adams. He also held prestigious positions such as a member of the Royal Irish Academy and the Professor Emeritus of Modern History at UCD. Additionally, Fanning served as the chief editor of the Dictionary of Irish Biography. He passed away in 2017, survived by his three children, after his partner, Virginia Caffrey, passed away in 2014.
